Development of New Antifungal Agents and Strategies

While filamentous fungi are considered important industrial production hosts, they also pose a severe threat to humans and the environment. An increasing number of resistant human and plant-pathogenic filamentous fungi has resulted in a demand for new antifungal agents and strategies.

By applying systems biology tools to Aspergillus niger, target molecules for antifungal strategies were identified, which have resulted in, inter alia, the foundation of the spin-off HiTeXacoat. Our aim is to identify additional target molecules and to test their interaction with microbial and herbal ingredients using high throughput approaches to find innovative and environmentally compatible as well as highly specific antifungal substances.
